I developed and co-delivered the Parallel Play workshops at the University of Arts Berlin, in 2024 and 2025: exploring playfulness and creative processes.
Why might we take play seriously?
What does playfulness feel like?
What does it mean to work ‘in parallel’?
How can play contribute to our creative practice?
With a focus on process, in Parallel Play we consider not just what we create, but how we create. Through playful exercises, reflection and discussion, we seek to break down the barriers to being creative. Play, playfulness and ‘playground’ are central to our exploration. Drawing on principles of practice-based research and feminist theory, we try out a broad range of hands-on exercises; finding inspiration in creative approaches across media and disciplines; reflecting on our own practice, both independently and collectively; and discussing ideas which open up bigger questions. We develop a ‘manifesto’ for our own practice.
